Pan-American Apartments in Buffalo and Johnson Park Green Community Apartments in Utica have achieved Passive House pre-certification through the Passive House Institute of the U.S (PHIUS).
This milestone acknowledges that the buildings are designed and modeled to the Passive House standard of envelope performance, operational efficiency, and indoor air quality. Passive buildings meet the highest level of energy efficiency, cost little to heat or cool, and achieve maximum air comfort. Phius sets the standard for passive house in North America.
DePaul’s Pan-American Apartments in Buffalo has achieved PHIUS + 2018 & Source Zero Pre-Certification. To achieve this pre-certification, the building must be designed to generate or procure as much renewable energy as it uses. The new community will include three buildings with 150 affordable homes with a mix of studio, one, and two-bedroom units. Construction is set is expected to be completed in 2024. SWBR is providing architectural, interior design, and structural engineering design services for the project.
Achieving PHIUS Core 2021 pre-certification, Johnson Park Green Community Apartments in Utica, NY will have three residential buildings and one community building for residents and the surrounding Utica community. The affordable housing community will also include supportive units for vulnerable seniors. In 2021, the design was selected as a winner in New York State Energy Research & Development’s (NYSERDA) Buildings of Excellence Competition that rewards the design, construction, and operation of carbon neutral-ready multifamily buildings. The project’s Passive House design is set to serve as a toolkit for future inner-city medium-density affordable housing developments. The project is a collaboration between Rockabill Consulting and Development and Johnson Park Center, a non-profit organization in the City of Utica, NY. SWBR is providing architectural and structural engineering design services for the project.
