Our design team was on-site March 13 to celebrate the official groundbreaking for The Salvation Army of Buffalo’s Main Street campus transformation. Hope on Main, a three-phase, $100 million development, will provide emergency shelter, affordable housing, and supportive services to help vulnerable Western New York residents.
The kickoff celebrated the first phase of the project – the Hope on Main Emergency Family Shelter – which will include 32 private living units with 80 beds to house families. The new shelter will replace the Salvation Army’s existing 77-bed shelter located on another parcel, so no residents will be displaced during construction. The first floor of the new building will have activity areas, a learning lab, administrative offices, and a laundry facility. The second and third phases of the project include the construction of 143 affordable apartments and 17 townhomes, in addition to a worship and community center.

SWBR is providing architecture and structural engineering design services for the project. The family emergency center is expected to be completed in 2026 and the apartments and townhomes are expected to be completed in 2028.
