New Gibbon Exhibit Opens at Utica Zoo

Our design team was on hand with Zoo representatives to cut the ceremonial ribbon for the White-Handed Gibbon Outdoor Living Rainforest exhibit on Thursday.

“This is going to be so great for them to have this kind of room and for visitors and our community. It’s now the first thing you see when you enter the Zoo. I think it really gives us the lift of credibility and the direction for people to know that the Utica Zoo has a lot of potential,” Andria Heath, Executive Director at Utica Zoo.

We provided architectural , landscape architecture, and structural engineering services for the new exhibit, which offers eight times more outdoor Gibbon habitat than the previous. The exhibit is free of metal bars, has a heated rock platform, a glass visitor viewing area, and provides a more modern living space for the primates to climb and swing in. The design-build team was The Pike Company, in association with SWBR and WDM Architects. Next up for the Utica Zoo and their development team is to renovate the zoo’s Spider Monkey exhibit and build a new Education Building.
