Irondequoit Community Center Celebrates Grand Opening

On October 4, our design team joined the Town of Irondequoit and other state and local officials to celebrate the grand opening of the new Irondequoit Community Center at Skyview on the Ridge. The facility, the only town-operated community center, is located in portion of the former Irondequoit Mall.

Working with the Town of Irondequoit and Irondequoit Recreation, we met the challenge of repurposing 42,000 SF of the large, abandoned property, long considered an eyesore to the community. The repurposed retail space is now an active, vibrant, safe, and inviting center for community engagement, education, wellness, and recreation that will provide a variety of programs to serve Irondequoit residents of all ages.

Now the new home of Irondequoit Recreation, the community center includes a basketball court, a walking track, fitness room, a dance/group exercise room, meeting space, a game room, space for pre-K programs, and more.

“What a beautiful facility it is,” said John Perticone, acting Irondequoit supervisor. “One thing you’ll notice is it’s not like other fitness centers you’ll see. We wanted to keep it focused on the community – not just fitness and sports, but a place where residents young and old can come together as one Irondequoit, one community.”

Also on hand to speak about the project’s success and its impact on the community and long-term growth of Irondequoit were Monroe County Executive Adam Bello, Representative Joe Morelle, and Assemblywoman Sarah Clark.

SWBR provided architectural, interior design, structural engineering, graphic design, and landscape architecture design services for the project.
