On April 27, our design team was on hand, along with state and local officials, at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Dunkirk Renovation and Ownership Program. The project, developed by Southern Tier Environments for Living, consists of 25 buildings on 24 different sites, including the rehabilitation of 12 existing one- and two-family houses and the construction of 13 new buildings.
Located in a prominent area of the city, close to Lake Erie, many of the homes and buildings have fallen into disrepair. The program will not only offer much-needed affordable housing and home ownership opportunities, but revitalize an important area of the city.
“We’ve been working on this project for three years,” said STEL Executive Director Thomas Whitney. “So, it’s great to put shovels into the ground. We are renovating or demolishing and building … sites from Dougherty Street down to the lakefront. Our goal is to redevelop some of the worst areas of a major thoroughfare in the city into nice, new workforce housing.”
The project is expected to be completed in 2020.
