The $16 million affordable and supportive housing project is located at the former DeWitt Clinton Elementary School in Rome, NY.
Originally built in 1924, the former school had long sat vacant in the City of Rome, NY. In 2017, DePaul purchased the building and land and redeveloped the site into an affordable housing community where residents also have access to support services to help them live successfully in the community.
DeWitt Clinton Apartments adds 80 high-quality affordable apartments to the city. The project takes the form of two buildings, one being a more traditional three-story structure, while the other is smaller and comprised of walk-up style apartments. “Together, they help to form an important step toward revitalizing their neighborhood and the nearby canal front,” said Project Architect Steve Peet, AIA.
Financing for the project includes federal low-income housing tax credits administered through New York State Homes and Community Renewal, which will generate nearly $16 million in equity. Additionally, HCR will provide funding of approximately $4.5 million through its Supportive Housing Opportunity Program. Housing Trust Fund will provide $3.5M. The New York State Office of Mental Health will provide $1 million in annual services and operating funds to support the 40 ESSHI supportive housing units, in addition to a $339,960 Program Development Grant. The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority provided a $80,600 grant.
SWBR provided architectural, interior, landscape architecture, and structural engineering design for the project.
