University of Rochester Omega EP Addition

Addition to the University of Rochester’s Laboratory for Laser Energetics.

The OMEGA EP laser system is an addition to the 60-beam UV OMEGA Laser System and extends the performance and capabilities of the Omega Laser Facility at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE). Funded mostly by the U.S. Department of Energy, more than 300 scientists and engineers shoot the lab’s two giant lasers dozens of times each week in various experiments. The function of the building dictates a massive and mostly windowless space, which includes a 30” thick floor slab to eliminate vibration. The M/E/P systems achieve precise ambient temperature and humidity control with less than 0.5% variation.

World-Class Precision

Because of the lasers, precision alignment to millimeters between building levels and constructed elements was critical and drove every aspect of its design, construction and aesthetic.

Improved Capabilities

A full-system laser shot cycle is typically 7 to 8 shots a day; however, a 45-minute interleaved shot cycle is possible for compatible experiments with 2 or more shots a day.
