Liberal Arts Building

SUNY Brockport’s Liberal Arts Building was the first new academic building in over 40 years, and there were a lot of interested parties involved. SWBR collaborated with all of them on every aspect of the building: purpose, physical design, sustainability and aesthetic.

The new 61,000sf, 3-story brick, glass and aluminum building incorporates the site’s natural pathways into its circulation and natural materials into its form and function. Flexible classrooms and tiered 200-seat auditorium utilize moving walls, varying furniture styles and the latest technologies. An art gallery, lounges, conference rooms, common areas, and faculty offices complete the public layout, with most systems located on the third floor. LEED Gold certification was achieved through reduction in water and energy consumption, diversion of waste from landfills and innovative use of recycled products in its construction.

The Liberal Arts Building took four years to complete, exceeding the College’s expectations according to James Willis, PhD, Vice President for Administration and Finance. “The building is transformational for the faculty who teach there, for the students who take classes there and for the campus as a whole.”
