Alice C. Barber Day Center and Kiesewetter Emergency Shelter

From its inception in 1887, the Rescue Mission has evolved to sustain its humanitarian mission for the Syracuse community it serves. When the organization needed to increase the capacity of its shelter and supportive services to help women, SWBR created the expanded design within the Mission’s existing facilities. Construction of a second-floor plate within the original 1990 pre-engineered metal building’s “high-bay” shell increased the floor area from 17,000sf to 35,000sf, making room for new designed mental health and healthcare suites, employment resource center, case management and administrative offices, conference and flexible-use rooms, laundry, fitness center, restrooms and showers. 51 beds were added in the Emergency Shelter, for a total of 183, as well as an observation area with an unobstructed view. Windows for natural daylight and new interior finishes were added throughout, creating an uplifting environment. The renovation effectively doubled the building’s space, making it possible for the Alice C. Barber Day Center and Kiesewetter Emergency Shelter to remain a prominent beacon of stability for its patrons, continuing a 130-year tradition of affecting positive change.
