Monroe Community College Gleason Hall of Science and Technology Renovation
Virtually unchanged since being built in the 1960s, MCC’s Gleason Hall of Science and Technology needed a major interior and infrastructure overhaul to transform it into a modern science and technology facility. SWBR created the design, implementing the work in phases, as the building needed to remain in use during the project. In Phase I, mechanical and electrical systems were replaced, and outdated spaces renovated into state-of-the-art electronic technology laboratory classrooms and support space. The balance of the interior was gutted and replaced in Phase II. Obsolete interior HVAC units were replaced with self-contained rooftop units. Over 250 solar panels were added to the roof. New IT, durable finishes and improved acoustics were added throughout. Gleason Hall now has more general classrooms, specialty labs and innovative sustainable systems, earning it LEED Gold Certification and recognition for its use of natural light and technology to encourage active learning. “SWBR has always demonstrated an understanding of the needs and potential of our students and how the built environment should support learning,” concluded MCC’s President Dr. Anne Kress.
