City Grill Restaurant and Bar

Rochester’s East Avenue and Alexander Street intersection has long been a hub of activity, the hotel and restaurant complex on the northeast corner being the exception. But the current owner saw potential, purchased the complex, began major updates to the hotel and engaged SWBR to transform the restaurant space.

The heavy rotunda on building’s front was removed and replaced with a fully glazed addition facing the intersection, anchored by a distinctive, landmark tower. The glass walls fold open, expanding the restaurant out onto the patio with exterior fireplaces, which extend its season. Inside, the once dark, dreary bar is filled with natural light and connected with the exterior. Dining spaces are oriented toward natural light, each configured for a different mood. Additionally, a 2,000 SF multi-purpose event space was created, and the roofed walkway connecting to the hotel, maintained.

The resulting visible energy of the front dining area and patio reaches out to engage East & Alexander, drawing foot traffic. A strengthened connection to the updated hotel provides a synergy between businesses. City Grill is now full of life year round.
