Hobart and William Smith Colleges Athletic Complex Renovations

HWS’s aging athletic facilities needed upgrading to reflect the pride and dynamics of the college’s sports programs. SWBR renovated the complex, which encompasses Boswell Field, Froelich Gatehouse, Elliott Varsity House, Bristol Field House, and Smith Squash Center. State-of-the-art artificial turf fields, “green” stadium flood lighting, and a new high-tech scoreboard were installed on Boswell Field. A new grandstand with seating for over 3,000 and two-level press box were built over the existing field house, which underwent phased renovations to keep important circulation routes open. The expansion extends under the grandstand, minimizing the facility’s footprint and cost to construct, and includes football, lacrosse and squash team rooms, equipment storage, sports medicine suite and spectator restrooms. All team rooms feature crafted oak lockers, a whiteboard, and state-of-the-art video equipment. Renovations to Froelich Gatehouse, including a new roof and elegant brick exterior, finished the project. The Caird Center for Sports and Recreation debuted to rave reviews. “Walking in gives you goose bumps,” said Lacrosse Head Coach Pat Genovese. “I’m so excited our student-athletes get the opportunity to play in such a premier facility.”
