2016 Capital Improvement Project
Bloomfield Central School District has recently made the commitment to go as green as possible. This initiative got a big push forward with their 2016 Capital Project, which included a large renewable energy project.
A roof-mounted photovoltaic system was installed at both the Elementary School and the Middle School/High School. Each system contains 192 solar panels to convert sunlight directly into electricity, producing 58 kilowatts of power an hour. With each system receiving a $54,272 NYS Energy Research and Development Agency incentive, total net costs were $175,402. Combined, the two systems are expected to produce 6-10% of the District’s electricity each year. The annual savings of $11,040-$18,400, exceeding the annual local share cost of the systems, which makes this green initiative a financially beneficial investment.
Additionally, the nearly $4M Project included: re-roofing, masonry work, site pavement rehabilitation, toilet room modernization, additional terrazzo flooring at Middle School/High School, ceramic tile in Elementary School corridors, telecom/data improvements including a new phone system, and HVAC, plumbing and electrical upgrades. All work was completed in 2014, and the District is already considering adding more solar panels in the future.
