It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Leo Murphy, a respected construction administrator and dedicated community servant, who passed away on July 22, 2024 at his lake home in Canandaigua after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 83 years old.
Leo’s career at SWBR in Rochester extended over 40 years. Known for his exceptional negotiating skills, he adeptly navigated disputes during construction projects, ensuring fair resolutions and project success for all sides. Colleagues remember him for his ability to provide clear, decisive direction when agreements were hard to come by. His meticulous field notes and use of classic three-part forms were a testament to his thorough approach to project management. He made sure everyone succeeded and got the job done right. He wasn’t the ribbon cutting guy in the suit and tie, Leo was always behind the scenes and the best ally any contractor had.
Leo was all business when it came to project work but had a great sense of humor – and when he flashed that mischievous grin, you couldn’t help but to laugh along with him.
Beyond his professional achievements, Leo was deeply committed to his community and country. He served in the Army and was a devoted member of the Penfield Volunteer Fire Department from 1969 until his passing, holding several leadership roles, including president and acting secretary of the Penfield Fire Commission. As a longtime member of Penfield Country Club, he enjoyed playing golf and was known for his infectious smile and loyalty to the New York Yankees.
