Our Director of First Impressions, Debbie Smith, Retiring After 45 Years

Debbie Smith has been the friendly voice on the phone, the welcoming smile at the front desk, and the cornerstone of SWBR’s positive first impression. After 45 years of dedicated service, her last day at the office will be December 22.

“Debbie embodies our spirit and energy and has been the face of SWBR since joining us in 1978,” says President Tom Gears. “Her dedication, wealth of knowledge, and positive attitude have been a major contribution to our culture and success. Debbie deepens our personal relationships and makes work fun. She has left a lasting impression at SWBR – we are grateful for her years of service and congratulate her on her well-earned retirement.”

When asked about some of her career accomplishments, Debbie cites the Tom Wurzer Memorial Golf Tournament. For almost 20 years she ran the tournament, a fundraiser for the University of Rochester’s Wilmot Cancer Center. Debbie’s tireless efforts made the annual event a success, ultimately raising over $300,000 towards cancer research throughout its run.

“Debbie is a team player,” said Administrative Manager Pauline Vieira. “Beyond being a welcoming presence for clients and co-workers, she is a dedicated part of the administrative team and helps keep our daily operations running smoothly. She’s leaving a legacy of kindness, positivity, and commitment. She will be missed.”

Debbie was working for the East Irondequoit Central School District in 1978 when she was asked by SWBR team members − architects working for the district at the time − to apply for a job at the firm. Beyond her administrative role, Debbie has spent considerable time giving back to the community. She organizes the firm’s annual clothing drives for charities including DePaul, Salvation Army, and Open Door Mission, and currently serves on the committee for St. John’s Senior Living Annual Golf Tournament fundraiser.

When asked what she has loved about working here, she said, “The people! I have life-long friends thanks to SWBR. The memories are the best!”

Debbie’s retirement plans include traveling with her husband and spending more time with family and friends. An avid golfer, she’s looking forward to increased time on the course.
