As designers, we see a new year as an opportunity for innovation, resiliency, and possibility in our world’s endless state of evolution. Here are some of the trends we see as worth watching in the year to come.
Equitable Design, Spaces
Well-designed buildings function equally for all occupants, no matter their characteristics. Inclusive spaces include flexible classrooms that accommodate different learning styles, accessible and affordable housing communities, and dignified senior communities that improve the safety, health, and wellness of
the residents.
Health and Wellness
Physical and mental health continues to be front-of-mind heading into 2022. Thoughtful and sustainable design solutions, including Biophilic Design, healthy material selection, and natural lighting, improve the health and wellness of occupants and the environment.
Technology
Technology isn’t new, but it’s moving faster than ever. School districts are continuing to embrace digital learning tools. Colleges and universities are increasingly investing in science buildings and laboratories. And workforce development programs are helping manufacturers keep up with the demand of Industry 4.0 by providing a labor force that is well-trained in smart technologies.
Adapt, Reuse, Repurpose
Evolving employee and consumer habits have created a portfolio of underused spaces. But these spaces don’t need to be torn down or left empty. They can be repurposed for different functions, such as much-needed affordable housing, learning spaces, or community centers.
Revitalized Communities
We’re seeing more community leaders looking to reverse decades of social and economic decline by moving forward with land use and transportation plans that promote improved quality of life. Highways are being removed and repurposed into boulevards that connect neighborhoods and promote a healthy, walkable lifestyle.
