Irondequoit Community Center

The adaptive reuse of a long-abandoned mall into a community resource.

Like other suburban communities, the town of Irondequoit was determined to find a new use for a portion of their inventory of underutilized or empty retail spaces. A needs assessment was developed through extensive data gathering, benchmarking, and user group meetings to assure alignment with the community’s needs and expectations. The center’s layout is the result of multiple space planning exercises to coordinate with the Town of Irondequoit’s needs and the future development of the remaining mall space.

Fulfilling the Client’s Goals

The design fulfilled Irondequoit’s vision for a modern, sleek, clean and open community center.

An Aesthetic Blend

The high ceilings and light-colored walls provide a bright and inviting environment bridge recreation and hospitality programs. Natural wood and stone elements provide warmth and comfort. Expansive interior views are achieved through an open floorplan, glass partitions, and transparent and translucent openings.

Programmatic Success

The completed project provides an overdue resource for the community and serves as an anchor in the redevelopment of the long-empty mall space.
