After successfully addressing a gap in Beechwood Continuing Care’s continuum of care on its campus by providing Independent Living Apartments at Asbury Pointe, SWBR was invited to lead the effort to provide renovations and additions to Beechwood’s Alzheimer’s Unit “E”. The existing 36-bed, double-loaded corridor, traditional “medical model” for skilled nursing was not meeting resident’s families or staff needs and was not remaining competitive in the marketplace. Through intense brainstorming with staff from all involved departments and research of newer facilities in the marketplace, a program to establish a “residential model” was established. A dining room “porch” addition will ease the congestion within the dining room, subdivide the space into smaller groupings, and provide a different spatial experience for the residents. A pantry redesign will allow the food service staff to maneuver effectively and provide a less institutional manner in which to present food. Garden room additions at both ends of the L-shaped unit will provide decentralized activity and lounge areas. Satellite nurse charting desks in the garden room will replace the central “nurse station” concept. Adjacent tub rooms will replace the former centrally located one and will be “spa-like” in interior finish. An inviting living room will be created at the entrance to the unit and the corridors will be renovated to support appropriate lighting, wayfinding and resident room personalization.
