Nazareth College Celebrates Grand Opening of the York Wellness and Rehabilitation Institute

Friday, September 18, 2015

On Friday, September 18, members of SWBR's design team celebrated the ribbon cutting of the Wellness and Rehabilitation Institute with the naming patron, Frank York, and the Nazareth community.

WRI has been deemed a testament to the School of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) unique model of interprofessional clinical education. Beyond being a home to the departments of Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech-Language Pathology, Art and Music Therapy, it includes clinical practice spaces where students provide affordable wellness, rehabilitative, and related educational services to underserved children and adults in our community under the supervision of award-winning faculty. It is a model for person-centered care.

Providing new classroom, conference and therapy spaces, the project facilitates growing academic programs, improves adjacencies, encourages connections and features new collaboration areas for faculty/student interaction.

The current needs for most HHS programs and their pedagogies require large, modern spaces and sophisticated construction. The design efficiently utilizes the existing building while creating an addition that would accommodate large bay therapy and specialty areas, such as the Physical Therapy Clinic, the Movement Analysis Laboratory, the Communication Sciences and Disorders Teaching Laboratory, and an Inter-Professional Group Therapy Room. The design carefully balances privacy requirements and openness, providing spacious and transparent spaces and a double-height central lobby that seamlessly connects the existing and new architecture.
