Greening Gibbs Street

Tuesday, April 22, 2014

In celebration of Earth Day, and to bring awareness to the importance of green space in urban environments, we are working with several local organizations to turn four city parking spaces on Gibbs Street into an urban park on Earth Day.

SWBR Architects in association with Java’s Café, Broccolo Tree & Lawn Care and Batavia Turf Farm have organized a local Greening Gibbs St. Event.

Inspired by a national movement based in San Francisco, called Park(ing) Day, the event is meant to “call attention to the need for more urban open space, to generate critical debate around how public space is created and allocated, and to improve the quality of urban human habitat.”

The spots will be barricaded off so that participants are safe from moving traffic. Broccolo is providing greenery (large containers with evergreen trees and some flowering shrubs), Batavia Turf Farm is providing sod, Java’s will supply tables and chairs for participants, and live music will be provided.

SWBR is also hosting a series of events throughout the week, including educational sessions on sustainability, including featured guests Experienced Brick which utilizes reclaimed brick and other materials in building projects and DIRTT — Doing It Right This Time, customizable wall and millwork systems for interiors, and new this year, SWBR will be analyzing their waste stream by sorting the office waste to identify areas of improvement. The firm will then upcycle some of that waste to Terra-cycle, who makes products out of non-recyclable items.
